Trauma-Informed Responses to Victims of Financial Fraud and Exploitation

November 17, 2020 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

A key tenant of a victim-centered response is being trauma-informed when assisting all victims. Financial fraud and exploitation are often viewed as less serious offenses, but they can be devastating – victims of fraud usually experience shame and guilt. And when exploitation is committed by someone that the victim knows and trusts, such as a caregiver, many aspects of the victim’s life can be impacted. In this webinar, presenters will discuss some of the research on fraud and victimization, and provide background information on trauma. Presenters will also discuss trauma-informed responses to older victims of fraud and exploitation, as well as some of the best practices that should be used when responding to all victims of financial crime.

Presenters:

– Laura Cook, director of training and technical assistance, the National Center for Victims of Crime

– Robert Mascio, director, FINRA, FINRA Investor Education Foundation

– Dr. Jo Anne Sirey, professor, Department of Psychiatry, Weill Cornell Medicine
