G. Morris Gurley Advocate for Justice Award

The G. Morris Gurley Advocate for Justice Award, presented by the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC), honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and advocacy for victims’ rights. Named in recognition of Morris Gurley’s pivotal role in founding the NCVC and his unwavering dedication to advancing victims’ rights since the 1980s, this award seeks to highlight an individual who has dedicated themselves to advocating tirelessly for victims’ rights.

This award not only honors the legacy of G. Morris Gurley but also seeks to inspire and recognize those who continue to champion the cause of victims’ rights, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are met.

Award Criteria:

Significant Progress in Victims’ Right and/or Track Record of Advocacy

Candidates must have made notable contributions that have led to significant advancements in the field of victims’ rights. This includes efforts that have influenced legislation, policy changes, or innovative programs that enhance support and protection for victims. Nominees should have a sustained history of advocating for victims’ rights over an extended period, demonstrating consistent and impactful engagement in this crucial area. This may include work with organizations, community initiatives, or public service roles that focus on elevating the voices and needs of victims. 

Bravery and Courage

The award recognizes individuals who have shown exceptional bravery in their advocacy efforts. This includes facing significant challenges, overcoming obstacles, or standing up against injustice in the pursuit of justice for victims. 

Leadership and Mentorship

Candidates should exhibit leadership qualities that inspire others in the victims’ rights movement. This may involve mentoring emerging advocates, fostering collaboration among organizations, or leading initiatives that mobilize communities to support victims. 

Commitment to Education and Awareness

Nominees must demonstrate a commitment to educating the public and raising awareness about victims’ rights issues. This includes engaging in public speaking, writing, or other forms of outreach that highlight the importance of supporting victims and their families. 

Innovation in Victim Services

Candidates should have introduced or supported innovative approaches to victim services, including the development of new programs, resources, or strategies that effectively address the evolving needs of victims in today’s society.
